GPResult access denied / Group Policy could not evaluate WMI

Summary

GPResult access denied / Group Policy could not evaluate WMI

Issue:

When trying to update Group Policy you may find that you get the error “Group Policy Failed. Windows could not evaluate the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)”

Another symptom would be an “Access Denied”, message when running

GPResult /r

Resolution:

To resolve the issue you simply need to reset the local WMI Repository.

This happens in particular on clients with the SCCM agent installed causing the local WMI repository to become corrupted.

Implementation:

This is done using the following command

winmgmt /resetrepository

Now simply update group policy using the following command

gpupdate

or the following to trigger a full Group Policy update rather than a differential update

gpupdate /force

If you find you are unable to reset the repository and are running the SCCM agent stop and disable the SMS_Agent service.
